The frames

The photographs, before the type.

  1. 01The photographs

The frame the page ran: a woman against the blue corrugated wall, the sign above catching the last of the light
The same, from further along the wall, the line of it running out behind her
The second sitter, a man in a dark suit, standing square against the same wall
The same man, closer, the corrugation running vertically behind him
The same man leaning into the lens, hands out, mid sentence

How it got made

The brief, the room, the frame.

It was Edify’s design issue, and Kim wanted to get out of the studio. I suggested the ETS transit garage on Fort Road, where I’d photographed the 53 Degrees 30 North sculpture for the Edmonton Arts Council, because I loved the building’s walls on their own. Getting in took approval from the Arts Council and the garage supervisor, and we all wore reflective vests. We had about twenty minutes with each architect, and I pushed the colour further than I usually go, to match Jill’s wardrobe. They needed it.
