How it got made
The brief, the room, the frame.
Kim wanted Kurt alone in a dark theatre with a giant popcorn, lit as if by the movie he was watching. We shot at the Garneau in November 2020. The one catch I flagged beforehand: the Garneau’s seats are grey with coloured triangles, and Kim had pictured red velvet. She said we’d make them work.
For the movie’s glow I put a small continuous spotlight at the back of the theatre and dragged the shutter to pick it up, then lit Kurt with a strobe. I also warned Kim the smell of popcorn might make me cry.
