Research Rockstar
Dr. Luc Berthiaume is a University of Alberta cell biologist who has spent 25 years in a little-explored area of cancer research: myristoylation, the process by which a fatty acid modifies proteins. His is one of only five labs in the world focused on it. That research led to PCLX-001, a drug that wiped out blood cancer tumours in four of five early studies, with $1.4 million in support from the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Phase 1 trials were set to begin in late 2020 or early 2021 in Toronto, Vancouver and at Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute.

This was May 2020, so the shoot moved into my studio and we kept our distance. Kim’s brief was lots of energy, playful and fun, with an opening shot and a second for the Q&A.
