How it got made

The brief, the room, the frame.

Roasti Coffee

I met Andrew Hayes at Roasti because we were both hunting for space at the same time. For a while the plan was that he’d carve out about a thousand square feet inside the roastery for my studio. In the end he stayed where he was, I found a warehouse bay, and we stayed friends.

His space was brand new when I came in to photograph him at the roaster.

Sam Uhlick Pottery

Sam Uhlick is my father-in-law, and he’s been a potter for more than fifty years. The first time I photographed him, in 2011, I just dropped by and shot him loading his kiln. I came back later for the portraits at the wheel and in the workshop, and in 2022 I photographed his pottery too.

When Alberta Craft put together Glorious Mud: 53 Years a Potter in 2023, they used those 2011 images.
