  1. 01The dancers

A dancer in a tan leotard and black shorts off the floor on grey, one leg kicked up behind her, hands spread
A dancer in grey shorts mid-leap on grey, knees bent under him, one arm swept back
A dancer stretched along the floor on grey, one knee drawn up, her pointe shoe to the floor and her head bowed over it
Two dancers on grey: one bent low and back in black, the other draped over his shoulder with one leg pointing straight up

How it got made

The brief, the room, the frame.

Ballet Edmonton needed three poster images for their 2019/20 season, on a medium grey that felt neutral but warm. We shot at the company’s own studio on their slate grey paper, because Wen Wei Wang, their artistic director, wasn’t going to let his dancers land jumps on my concrete floor. Fair enough.

I photographed the whole company that day, hundreds of frames, singles and doubles in every combination we could think of. They pulled three for the season’s posters, ads and media campaign.
