Sting
The first one, before I knew it was a project — and the one that taught me the most.
This was the first one, shot before I knew any of this was going to become a project. Wardrobe was a black turtleneck my parents gave me — always good to have a black turtleneck on hand.
A hard line with nothing to make it
This was my first attempt at the hard shadow line. Easy enough with a spotlight and barn doors; I owned neither, and I wanted the look anyway. So: a snoot, and a hard black flag — a piece of hard foam cardboard.
I assumed the flag had to be as close to the light as possible, almost cutting into the snoot. That gave a really soft nothing, so I learned that the flag closer to the subject was what made this actually work.
What it turned into
That one discovery grew into a series of my own later the same year — a slice cut into a card, shot through it. Same principle as the flag, moved right up to the face.
