The story
When Business and Philanthropy Intersect
Baumgardner is managing partner of Westbrand Group of Companies, which sells bolts and gaskets to distributors across Canada, and an Alberta Cancer Foundation board member. He has been involved since 2014, when the foundation asked him to co-chair the Cross Cancer Institute Golf Classic, which he did for nearly ten years. A clinical trial saved his father’s life, and cancer took his father-in-law. He believes giving lends a company purpose and trust, and hopes younger entrepreneurs will build their communities as they build their companies.
He was photographed on his ranch southwest of Edmonton, near Devon.

How it got made
The brief, the room, the frame.
Darren chose his ranch near Devon, because that’s where his heart is. We went out in the evening, after a radio interview of his, aiming for the light near sunset. The wildfire smoke was heavy that week, and I didn’t like how the portraits looked with much sky in them, so we found some textured barns and went in closer.
The horses came at the very end. We were finished, and I asked if he wanted to go hang out with them. Some of those frames made it into the magazine.
