The story
Bright Mind
Dr. Walker, an epidemiologist, leads the Precision Analytics team at Cancer Care Alberta, the provincial cancer care organization within Alberta Health Services. Working with the tech company AltaML, her team applies machine learning to Alberta’s connected health data to forecast future cancer care needs, as more people live longer with cancer and new diagnoses rise with the province’s population. The aim is to guide where specialists and resources go. She grew up in Toronto, earned her PhD at the University of Alberta in 2017 and joined Cancer Care Alberta in 2020.

How it got made
The brief, the room, the frame.
We had to fit this one in before Emily left town. She first suggested the top of Cloverdale hill, but the Folk Fest tents were going up, and after reading the article I wanted campus anyway. We met at the top of the escalators at the Health Sciences LRT station, and the frames that ran came from the glass pedway between the station and the Kaye Clinic. On a summer morning I’m always looking for shade, or starting as far from solar noon as I can.
