Leading by Example
The feature ran in the Partnerships section of Leap’s Partnership Issue, which looks at why collaboration matters in cancer research, treatment and care. Its subject is mentorship: Dr. Tony Fields, an oncologist the magazine calls a cancer care visionary, has mentored many young doctors, Dr. Jennifer Spratlin among them, and the story looks at the example he sets for her in professionalism and leadership.

01Leap, Fall 2019
How it got made
The brief, the room, the frame.
Kim’s brief for this Leap cover was mentorship: something clean, tone on tone in blues and greys, one sitting and one leaning. Dr. Fields had mentored Dr. Spratlin, and we had half an hour with the two of them in my studio. I’d tested the grey and the light a few days before so we could go straight in.
Kim brought a black stool for the cover, and for the inside pages I borrowed a well-worn banker’s chair from my parents’ house while they were away on vacation. I set the stools at different heights so their heads would line up, and the cover came out of that half hour.
