Ryan Parker’s portrait of Andrea Menard ran on the cover of Canadian Lawyer’s 2022 Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers issue, under the cover line Métis Powerhouse.
The story
Métis Powerhouse
Andrea Menard is the president and founder of Indigenous Connect, a non-profit offering culturally relevant Indigenous legal services and truth and reconciliation education to lawyers, judges and academics. She is Métis, descended from the Red River Métis Settlement, and grew up in Prince George, B.C. She teaches law at the University of Calgary and Osgoode Hall, leads work on Indigenizing curricula at the University of Alberta, and co-founded Alberta’s Indigenous Lawyers’ Forum. Her argument is that Indigenous laws, which predate Canada, belong inside its legal systems. Canadian Lawyer named her to its 2022 Top 25 in the government, non-profits and associations category.

How it got made
The brief, the room, the frame.
Andrea’s been in front of my camera a number of times, and it’s always wonderful to see her. This was a session she booked herself, and the sash was her idea. When Canadian Lawyer named her to its 2022 Top 25, the magazine ran the portrait on its cover.
