How it got made

The brief, the room, the frame.

Age Out Loud started with Izabella Roth, who I’d photographed at her previous company. Infinity Healthcare wanted amazing seniors, fully styled, with Iris Apfel as the reference. I brought in Leona Brausen, a theatre costume designer and a close friend, who has every costume you could think of.

Each person went to wardrobe first. Once Leona had them dressed, she and I picked their backdrop together. Davina Stewart was the glue of the day, getting everyone in and out of their outfits, and Hiccup the dog hung out the whole time and became our twelfth senior. It was about nine hours, exhausting and so much fun. Spending a day with people who’ve found a new lease on life is about as good as this job gets.
